How to Draw
Learning how to draw can be one of the most rewarding and fun activities a person can undertake. This guide is provided for those who wish to learn how to draw as well as those looking to improve their drawing skills.
How do you get good at drawing?
I’ve asked this question to every artist I know and the one thing they all say about learning how to draw is, how much time you spend practicing, is more important than how talented you are.
What’s funny about that answer is, it’s true for almost anything you do. The secret to getting good at something, is repetition and frequency. How many times you attempt something and how often you repeat it, are the two most important variables in getting good at something, including drawing.
With drawing, hand-eye coordination and recognizing errors in your work are the key skills to focus on. The only way to improve these skills is to repeat the process hundreds of times, so that muscle memory begins to take over and your attention to detail becomes so well honed that you spot those errors and correct them as they occur.
Incidentally, that’s also how you get faster at drawing too.
Do books and tutorial videos help?
Reading books and watching tutorials will definitely help you improve your drawing skills. This is exactly why there are so many books about drawing. Some books help you learn the basics, while others help you learn the more complex details of drawing. Whatever your skill level is, referencing source materials, such as books and videos, will help you improve your skill, learn new techniques and take your drawing to another level. Just remember, practice and consistency must be applied generously, or no amount of knowledge in the world will help you improve your drawing skill.
